Terry McGillTerry McGill grew up in Closter, NJ. His first musical memory is of his father singing "The Cat Came Back" on his Orpheum Senator archtop guitar. Terry also remembers his father listening to the Mercury recordings of Flatt and Scruggs and distinctly remembers the great tenor singing of Curly Seckler on "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms". Other music played on his father's record player was that of The Stanley Brothers, Hank Williams, Johnny and Jack, Kitty Wells, Wilf Carter, The Carter Family, Mac Wiseman, and pretty much any Country singer from the 30's through late 50's.
When Terry was 13 he recieved his first banjo for a birthday present. By the time he was 17 he had earned enough money working on a local farm picking vegetables and taking care of the woodchuck population to buy a Gibson RB250 Mastertone.Terry played in his first bluegrass band when he was in high school.
While attending Fairleigh Dickinson University in the late 1980’s, Terry hosted The Country and Bluegrass Round-Up, a radio show featuring vintage country and bluegrass music.
Terry has played in many bluegrass bands through the years, most recently with his own band, Straight Drive. In 2001 Terry released his first recording entitled Straight Drive featuring several original instrumentals and vocals as well. In January 2003, Terry was featured in the national publication The Banjo Newsletter. Terry has appeared at many bluegrass festivals and events including Central Park in New York City, Ralph Stanley’s Hills of Home Festival in McClure, VA and The High Mountain Hayfever Festival in Westcliffe, CO.
